Wellington Walks: Visiting Zealandia

Why is it that if we live close to a major landmark, we never have the energy to go to it? It seems we’re all so lazy about exploring our local area, maybe because it holds no surprises for us.

Since we moved to Wellington in June, we’ve been living a 15 minute walk from Zealandia. Arguably New Zealand’s biggest eco-tourism attraction. With the nature reserve basically on our doorstep, we’ve always put off going. There was always something else further away we could do. Zealandia could wait. A Short Letter to My Noisy Neighbours

A house in Wellington, New Zealand.

Dear Gay Guy Who Lives Upstairs,

It’s with much regret that I must inform you that you are not an owl. I’m sure this will come as some surprise to you. After all, you seem to spend the majority of your time hooting loudly. Wellington Walks: City to Sea Walkway

With a week off work, I decided to do a few walks by myself. So on a hot, calm day I headed out to walk Wellington’s City to Sea Walkway.

The walk is appropriately named starting off near Wellington’s downtown area and twisting through various city parks, then over hills for 12km to the sea.

Despite traveling through plenty of them, this trail was no walk in the park. Constantly climbing up and down Wellington’s many hills for its duration – leaving me sweaty and dehydrated.

The first climb went through the Botanical Gardens ending at this typical view from Wellington’s cable car.

The Wellington, New Zealand cable car.

Bubbles on soccer pitch
We’ve been in Wellington for a month now, so we decided it’s probably about time we went out and did some socialising. This is one of the hardest things when you move to a new city, finding new friends and ways to meet like-minded people.

Fortunately Jamie and I are both big users of the website Reddit. Most big cities have their own Reddit group and often the users meet up to socialise. When somebody posted on the Wellington group that there would be a meetup for bubble football we decided to pounce on the opportunity.
