Das Bloggen

Picking a name for this blog was tough. There were so many choices and so little inspiration.

My first, and final idea was Das Bloggen.

I first thought up the Das part. It’s German. Germany is cool, right? I thought that just by having a German title my blog would automatically become more cool. People would arrive on my site and go, “Woah, this English blog has a German title? This dude must be really cultured! I bet he speaks German and wanders around Europe having loads of crazy adventures.” Those people would be wrong. I can’t speak German and the closest I’ve been to Germany is eating a Frankfurter.

But still, the German angle worked, so I stuck with it, trying to think up a second word. Something equally German sounding, and appropriate. But I was bored, and lazy. So I just thought “well, this is a blog…”bloggen’ sounds German…I’ll just use that!”

Thus Das Bloggen was born.

Months later I stopped being bored, and lazy. I checked online to see if the term “das bloggen” had any meaning. It does. It means “the blogging” which may or may not make sense. I’ve no doubt German people come to my site, laugh at the terrible German title, then leave saying “he can’t speak German, he’s so uncool!” They’re totally right.

  1. Good luck with these. I too would love to be paid for at least one piece of writing before I die. And there’s an awesome book inside my head – I’d like to get it out there!

  3. Great goals. I hope you achieve them.
Since I was dismissed from my teaching job for being diabetic I’ve been pursuing goals that I’ve had for years. It’s great fun and incredibly rewarding.
So far I’m homeschooling my younger son, I’ve set up my own education website and create and publish my own resources, I’ve written a short e-book on private tuition, I run my own tuition business, I write and I’ve sold an article and I have a freelancing business. Oh and I’m running a retro/vintage sewing pattern business for my mum as well so I’m incredibly busy crafting too. Who knew losing a job could open so many doors and lead to such rich personal rewards and the ability to achieve life-long dreams?
Don’t lose sight of your dreams as it’s never too late to achieve them.

Woah. Far too busy a life for me. I’m a master procrastinator so would find so many tasks a little overwhelming.

Your ideas is very enjoyable. So with the above idea, you should think about my country, Viet Nam. Before you die, you should visit my country, sure! :)

nice goals! – Tend a garden, allotment or piece of land for one whole year, through every season – this sounds AMAZING! if i don’t live in nyc i’d love to have a garden to planet all my vegetable and flowers…;(

btw where did you go to film school?

    • mrdanbaird said:

I didn’t go to a film school, I just went to a normal university in England to study Film and Radio production. My main focus was on screenwriting as that’s what I enjoy the most.

  6. Wow, I’ve really enjoyed reading a bit of this blog – you write well. I’m taking a year to travel myself, so it’s interesting to read about your adventures. One of my initial plans was hiking the AT, though now it looks like I’ll only be able to fit in a month of it.

Best of luck with these goals!

  7. Hi Dan,

You’ve got an interesting Blog here. I am really enjoying reading it. Wish I had found it earlier, but don’t worry I’ll catch up on my reading here soon.

Well, in relation to your list of Goals, I’d like to offer my perspective. I don’t actually have such a list, but I do have places noted in my head that I would like to travel to.

    If I were to compare my own experiences to your list of Goals, then could tell you that I have completed the following from it;
*Tend a piece of land, for a whole year. (I grew u on a farm in rural West Ireland).
*Grow a beard. (I currently have one).
*Fall in love. (I recently married the love of my life).
*Learn to drive. (First taught to this by my Dad, at the age of twelve).
*Learn how to take down a tree with a chain-saw/axe. (Farm upbringing again)
*Teach English as a Foreign Language. (Did this in Brazil).
*Learn another language fluently. (Can do this in Portuguese, German & Irish).

So that’s the extent of my own experiences matching your Goals. If you would like my opinion of how you might go about ticking them off your list, then by all means let me know.

  10. Your goals sound beautiful. I wish well…

  11. I really like your blog posts! the way you describe things is very lush, not to mention that it’s always well reflected on, and has a resolution at the end.

I hope to be able to blog as well as you someday! :D

  12. Nice Goals! I hope to play Glastonbury one year. My page is about my aim to become successful in music, its early days yet but if I achieve it, I hope to see as much of the world as possibly I can. You cant beat the great outdoors!

  13. Glastonbury Festival is a must and if you like the arts as well as live music Port Eliot Festival (Cornwall, England) is another one to add

  14. Laughed at your comment on my blog. Your photography is excellent. How’s that beard coming along?

    • Dan B said:

It’s not going too well I’m afraid. I don’t think I’ll ever have enough growth to beat old Osama. I’ll be happy with a Saddam beard in honesty. Although I’m afraid eventually I’ll just have to settle for a Hitler tache.

  15. Well, I fear you! So I posted today! :-D And I guess now it’s my turn to complain! Your FB link is not working! I know that cos I tried to stalk you today! :-D

Hi Dan. Thanks for the “like” on my blogs “Starting From Scratch” entry. (http://dixieriders.com/2012/02/01/starting-from-scratch/). I just finished browsing your blog and find it very interesting. I wanted to “like” it also but was unable to find the like button to click. Assuming I didn’t just miss it somehow… have you considered activating it? I’m sure you’ll get plenty of likes! :)

    • Dan B said:

Thank YOU for the comment! I think my like button does work, but you can’t see it for some reason? Maybe. I’ll have to check my settings!

  19. Hi Dan, I love your humour!

Reading your moss stories has made me laugh out load (and even conjured-up a pig snort!) numerous times.

You must know some German and if you really don’t you’re incredibly lucky you’ve picked the correct German article for blogging (there’s three: male: der, female: die, neutral: das)

Anyway, hope your job won’t distract you from blogging too much. I can’t wait to read more!

    • Dan B said:

Thanks. My German is terrible (possibly because I’ve never learnt any properly.) My German friends in the past have always taken pleasure in listening to me say “das guten sheissen.” This is my translation of “the good shit.” Meaning…something really awesome. “Guten tag. Das essen ist das guten sheissen.”

Thankfully my English is much better…

    thanks for the like! :)
I checked out your blog and now I’m confused as to how many people are actually writing here? Are you plural? Hmm.

    • Dan B said:

The site was written by a few people for a short time period, but we all became lazy. The majority of the articles are written by me (Dan)! I don’t think I’ve had a guest writer for at least 9 months, hah.

I just stopped by to say thank you for “liking” my post, “The Gap Between My Selves.” I love your little story about the title of your blog, and the strong, humorous voice coming through in your writing. Thank you! R.

  23. Hey, Dan-the-man! You snuck into my site and clicked “like” but you were too shy to comment! :)

I was just in Vancouver over the summer. My first trip to Canada (ever)- we drove from Southern California up to WA, ferried across to the island, and then over to North Vancouver. We camped at Paradise Valley (just below whistler) We had a blast!

I’m looking forward to reading more of your future posts. Feel free to stop back in my end of the blog-o-sphere! Make sure to say hello! No “sneak-a-peeks!” :)

I love meeting a whole bunch of pals across the globe.

It’s as hard (or harder) to name a blog than a child, though they are very similar in comparison. Both are a part of us, and we’ll leave our imprint on them. Thanks for stopping by my blog. This reminds me, I bought a German cookbook (written in English) at a library book sale. I wonder if they have a good frankfurter recipe…

  25. Hey, your stuff is really great and thoughtful keep it up man XD

  26. Hi Dan
i’ve nominated you for the Kreative Blogger Award and One lovely Blog Award.
    Cheers,
    Christina
